Each year on my kids birthday’s we have a mommy date and they get to pick out a book. Usually what happens is they pick out one and then I choose one too. My son wanted a Diego book and was on a mission. I just kind of hoped he wouldn’t see one and we could pick out something fabulous. No, he found one and that’s all he could think about. I should have just got him the one he wanted perhaps, I just couldn’t swallow spending money on a Dora and Diego book. So we got the book I wanted him to get. A book I knew he would love much more and much longer than Diego. Anyhow…. So, we are walking out of the store and heading to our car in the mall parking lot when he just breaks into sobbing. Hysterical sobbing (so not like him), in fact I don’t know if I have ever heard him cry like that. I told him that he will be getting gifts from his grandparents and his brothers and sisters later, and I tried to do the whole “you need to be happy with what you have (starving children in Africa)” speech. Ya, not real effective when your 4. Then he breaks into screaming, “I WANT EVERYTHING, EVERY TOY IN THE WHOLE WORLD!!!” I WANT EVERY BOOK AND EVEN EVERY TOOL, I WANT EVERYTHING FOR MY BIRTHDAY….EXCEPT NEWSPAPERS!” There was an old couple walking by and they and I burst out laughing… also not helping the situation. We got in the car and he was asleep within 5 minutes. Clearly he was very tired. He ended up having a great birthday and got some really fun toys… blocks, some train tracks for his collection, blue painting tape (something he spends hours playing with and has exhausted my supply) - ALL WRAPPED IN NEWSPAPER.
