Girls Camp 2009 “An Eternal Adventure”

When I was young, I was one of those girls that absolutely loved camp. I loved the woods, the friends, the songs, the skits, and especially the spirit that I always felt there.  I have to say that as an adult my excitement for girls camp has not changed. I was so thrilled to get to go this year. This was my first time at Camp Shadow Pines too. What a beautiful camp.

Our theme this year was “Treasure Island – an Eternal Adventure”. Each ward was represented by a gem stone and color of the YW value. (Golden Girls of Virtue, Diamonds of Faith, Red Ruby’s of Individual Worth, etc.) We, the stake staff were the Pink Pearls.  The theme was so inspirational. The idea of it was that the girls needed to seek out eternal treasures. Everyone that had a part in it did such a fantastic job. I know that everyone I worked with really put their heart and soul into it. I think the girls got so much out of camp this year.

My job, in addition to CRAFT QUEEN, and Service Project, was to be the camp photographer. It was a great way to get to know so many of the girls from the other wards who I didn’t know real well. The last day Bro. Teeples put together a slide show with the pics that was killer. Loved it. Thanks Loree for this nutso pic of me. I think this is one of the only ones I have of myself at camp. Isn’t that how it goes when you are always behind the camera.

What an amazing group of women I was able to work with. I have gained many new friendships that I will always “TREASURE”. I love these girls!

Ok- so the RAT STORY. It is around, 1 am in the Stake Staff cabin, and  I’m standing there on the floor in the center of the room as all the ladies are surounding me on the couches and chairs. I am telling my most fateful “most embarrassing moment” story (ladies SHHHH, what is told at camp stays at camp right). Suddenly from behind the couch creeps a RAT, no, I didn’t say mouse – it was the biggest rat I had ever seen like the size of a small dog. Ok, so I don’t know how to quite paint the picture, but It seemed to look right at me. Freaked me out. I leaped up to a chair and screamed “There is a RAT!!!” The women thought at first it was part of my story. They began moving the couches to try to find it but it just wasn’t there. They put the couches back and all sat down again. Except me because I knew it was there somewhere. Then it made another appearance and in about ½ a second every lady was standing on a chair. I think we only had about 8 chairs and there were about 12 of us in the room. Someone called the Miners (The priesthood) on the Wakie takies and they said all they could hear was. “Ahhhhhhh, RAT, Aggghhhhhhh Rat”. They came bursting into our room with sticks, spears and brooms. At one point I was up sitting on the highest kitchen counter, on top of our food. Tthe chair I was on was where the rat deciced to hide and also ended up being the final resting place for the beast. The guys stabbed it with a wooden stake (totally gross) I remember one of the men yelling “could you move!!” I really had no where to go. Somehow I flew threw the air and landed on Miquels chair with her. Right about that time Pres Petersen regressed to his Decon years and waved the Dead Rat in our faces. Miquel and I somehow ended up falling onto the sofa bed that was open (she on her back and I face forward) Oh, it was lovely. We totally busted the bed too. So funny. Sara fell off her chair too trying to get away from the bloody rat and got pretty hurt (so sad). Total chaos I tell you. All in all I was really greatful to those Minors. I think I would have slept in my car if they didn’t come and get it. We laughed and laughed for hours. We even made up a funny song to sing at flag the next morning.

Here it is…. (to the tune of Michael Jacksons “Thriller”

“It’s close to midnight,

scary rat is lurking by the chair.

stake staff cabin

we see it, start to scream, quite a scare.

we scream & scream

Priesthood hears that there’s a crisis brewing

They come to see.

Muscles, courage, brooms are flying

We’re Paralyzed!!!!

Cause It’s a Thriller, Thriller night

The Miners chased the rat and the leaders were a fright.

Kill, Kill the Rat.

Leaders falling down, We’re shouting

Get it, Get it, GOT IT!!

The Minors decided it would be SOooooooooo funny to poke fun at us and give the girls a little dinner theater. They reinacted the rat scene from the night before. It really was totaly funny.camp101

The last night I was up  late editing pics, and Bro. Barker thought it would be so funny to throw the fake mouse into our cabin. It landed right on my computer and was jumping all around. Yes, got me again. I flew, really, i think I had wings, across the room and landed on Miquel again. Man, was I jittery or what. camp111

June 7, 2009 - 10:11 am Sarah Stephens - Ashley you are hillarious. I'm so glad that you got to go to girls camp and we could laugh ourselves silly together. I love your rendition of the rat story. I laughed at the part where Pres. Peterson regressed to his Deacon days. You are the best, thanks for all you did. We need another excuse to get together. Oh and I love that picture of you, I'm putting it on my blog too.

June 7, 2009 - 2:38 pm Loree Zito - Hey Lady! I loved your girls camp tales too! I am really happy I got to know you more! You are one neat lady! I will be laughing about girls camp in the years to come! Thanks for the fun!
